Marc Marquez has finally moved to the top of the 2026 MotoGP championship standings after winning a dramatic San Marino Grand Prix at Misano. The Ducati rider capitalised on Marco Bezzecchi鈥檚 opening-lap crash before holding off his younger brother Alex Marquez to claim a crucial victory.
The result puts Marc level with Jorge Martin on 274 points, but he takes the championship lead because of his superior number of Grand Prix victories. Martin has one Grand Prix win this season, while Marc now has four.
The turnaround is particularly significant considering Marc was once 102 points behind Bezzecchi earlier in the season. His recent run has completely changed the complexion of the title fight.

Marc鈥檚 victory at Misano represents a major shift in a championship that had been dominated by Aprilia鈥檚 Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin for much of the season.
The Ducati rider started from the front row alongside pole-sitter Bezzecchi, but the Italian initially made the better getaway and took control of the race. Marc settled into second, while Martin followed in third.
Everything changed at Turn 13 on the opening lap when Bezzecchi lost control of his Aprilia and crashed out of the lead. The home favourite was unhurt, but the incident cost him a potentially huge points haul and allowed Marc to take control.
For Bezzecchi, the retirement was another major setback in a season where he had previously established himself as one of the leading championship contenders.
Marc Marquez MotoGP Points Lead Comes After Martin’s Challenge
Marc did not have the race completely under control after Bezzecchi鈥檚 retirement.
Jorge Martin initially looked quicker and began putting pressure on the Ducati. On lap seven, the Aprilia rider made his move at Turn 4 and briefly took the lead from Marc.
However, Martin could not extend his advantage. Marc gradually recovered his pace and retook the lead on lap 12 with a move at Turn 6. From there, the championship battle began to turn decisively in the Ducati rider鈥檚 favour.
Alex Marquez then passed Martin two laps later, before Pedro Acosta also moved ahead of the Aprilia rider on lap 16. Fermin Aldeguer subsequently overtook Martin as well, leaving the championship leader down in fifth.
That result was enough for Martin to finish the race level on points with Marc, but the Ducati rider moved ahead on the countback.

Once Marc reclaimed the lead, Alex remained within striking distance but never got close enough to make a serious attempt for victory.
The elder Marquez controlled the final stages and crossed the line 0.657 seconds ahead of Alex, while Acosta finished third, 2.326 seconds behind the winner. Aldeguer took fourth and Martin completed the top five.
The result also produced an unusual top five, with five Spanish riders occupying the first five positions.
Marc鈥檚 victory was his 78th MotoGP win, while Alex鈥檚 second-place finish continued his strong recovery after an injury-hit season. Acosta also secured his fifth podium of the campaign.

For Aprilia, the San Marino Grand Prix became a nightmare despite Bezzecchi starting from pole at his home circuit.
The Italian had looked capable of controlling the race after getting ahead of Marc at the start. But his first-lap crash meant he scored no points, allowing both Marc and Martin to gain heavily in the championship battle.
Bezzecchi now sits 33 points behind Marc and Martin, a huge change considering he had previously held a sizeable advantage over the reigning champion.
The Aprilia rider鈥檚 retirement was also part of an unusually attritional race. Only 14 riders finished, with Johann Zarco, Alex Rins, Francesco Bagnaia, Joan Mir, Diogo Moreira, Jack Miller and Bezzecchi among those who failed to reach the chequered flag.
Bagnaia鈥檚 retirement was particularly disappointing for Ducati, marking his fourth retirement in five races.

The championship now heads into the next round with Marc and Martin tied on 274 points, while Bezzecchi remains firmly involved despite his Misano setback.
Marc鈥檚 rise is one of the biggest stories of the second half of the season. After being more than 100 points behind the championship lead earlier in the campaign, the reigning champion has transformed his position through a combination of victories, consistency and mistakes from his rivals.
Marc also won Saturday鈥檚 sprint at Misano, giving Ducati maximum momentum across the weekend.
The reigning champion, however, knows the title fight is far from finished.
Speaking after the race, Marc stressed that he would continue pushing until the end and acknowledged that the championship remains extremely close. He also pointed to the importance of avoiding mistakes in a season where small errors can result in major points losses.
With the championship moving to Austria next weekend, Marc will now have to defend his newly acquired position at the top of the standings.
For the first time in 2026, the reigning MotoGP champion enters a Grand Prix weekend as the championship leader.
