At only 16, Great Britain’s Samuel James has already become a European U18 champion. His record-breaking leap in Rieti has now earned him a place at the World U20 Championships in Eugene, with Dakar 2026 another major target on the horizon.

There are some moments in athletics when a young athlete does more than win a medal. They change the expectations around what might be possible.

For Samuel James, that moment came in Rieti, Italy.

The 16-year-old British high jumper produced a stunning 2.25m clearance at the European U18 Championships on July 18, 2026, to win the gold medal and announce himself as one of the most exciting young high-jump prospects in international athletics.

The performance was not simply a championship victory. It was a dramatic breakthrough that saw James improve his personal best by 16 centimetres, establish a new European U18 Championships record and equal the British U18 record. World Athletics also listed the mark as the world-leading U18 performance at the time.

A 16cm leap that changed everything

James entered the European championships with an official personal best of 2.09m, according to the competition record, although his season had subsequently progressed to 2.15m. In Rieti, he took his performance to another level altogether.

His winning height of 2.25m represented a remarkable improvement and immediately placed him among the leading junior high jumpers in the world.

World Athletics records James’ 2.25m as his current personal best and lists him as European U18 champion. The performance carries a results score of 1135 points on the World Athletics scoring system.

The key numbers

Athlete: Samuel James

Age: 16

Country: Great Britain & Northern Ireland

Event: Men’s High Jump

European U18 result: Gold

Winning clearance: 2.25m

Previous PB: 2.15m

Improvement: +16cm from his earlier official PB

World Athletics result score: 1135

Date of breakthrough: 18 July 2026

Venue: Stadio Guidobaldi, Rieti, Italy

World Athletics’ official results show James winning the final at 2.25m, comfortably ahead of Poland’s Dawid Barański, who finished second at 2.12m, while Germany’s Jan Ungeheuer and Lithuania’s Redas Šiuipys shared third at 2.09m.

From championship gold to record books

The most significant part of James’ Rieti performance was the height itself.

His 2.25m clearance became a new European U18 Championships record. It also equalled the British U18 record, a mark that had stood since 1990. British Athletics confirmed that the performance moved James into the top three among World U20 athletes.

The achievement was also significant closer to home.

James competes for Kingston AC & Polytechnic Harriers, and his performance broke the Surrey U18 record. The previous mark of 2.18m, set by Ousman Cham in 1980, had remained on the county record books for 36 years. James has now moved to the top of Surrey’s all-time U18 high-jump rankings.

The scale of the breakthrough becomes clearer when placed alongside the history of the event. World Athletics reported that no U18 athlete had jumped higher than 2.25m since 2019, while James’ clearance moved him to equal 13th on the world U18 all-time list.

A champion who is only getting started

What makes James’ rise particularly interesting is his age.

At 16, he is still firmly in the early stages of his athletic development. High jump demands a combination of speed, timing, strength, body control and technical precision, and improvements in any one of those areas can raise an athlete’s ceiling.

James’ sudden 16cm improvement therefore offers a glimpse of what could come if he continues progressing steadily.

His European title also provides something equally important: experience of delivering under championship pressure.

Winning a competition is one challenge. Clearing a major personal best when a medal is on the line is another.

James managed both.

Eugene comes next

His remarkable Rieti performance has already changed his immediate competitive schedule.

James was added to Great Britain’s team for the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, which run from 5 to 9 August 2026. British Athletics selected him following his European U18 breakthrough.

The move from U18 competition to a global U20 championship represents a significant step up.

James will face older and more experienced athletes, but his 2.25m clearance has already demonstrated that he possesses the ability to compete at a very high junior level.

Eugene, therefore, will not simply be another competition. It will be an opportunity to measure the European champion against the world’s best U20 high jumpers.

Dakar 2026 adds another chapter

Beyond Eugene, James’ ambitions extend towards Dakar 2026, where the Youth Olympic Games will offer another major international platform for the next generation of athletes.

For James, the pathway is beginning to look remarkably clear: European champion at 16, a record-breaking 2.25m clearance, a place on Britain’s World U20 team and a potential future at the Youth Olympic Games.

But the most important part of his story may be what happens after the breakthrough.

The high jump is unforgiving. A single exceptional clearance can make headlines, but long-term success requires consistency, technical development and the ability to repeatedly perform under pressure.

James has now shown that he can produce a giant leap when it matters.

The next challenge is to make 2.25m the starting point rather than the destination.

For British athletics, that could be the most exciting development of all.

WHAT HAPPENED IN RIETI?

Samuel James entered the European U18 Championships as a promising young British high jumper. He left Italy as a European champion and record-holder.

His 2.25m clearance gave him gold, established a championship record and equalled the British U18 best. He also moved ahead of a long-standing Surrey record that had survived for decades.

The result has now opened the door to the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, where James will get an early opportunity to test himself against the world’s strongest junior competition.

At 16, he has already raised the bar.

Now the athletics world will be watching to see how high he can take it.
