Indian high jumper Sarvesh Kushare has entered a new chapter in Indian athletics after producing the biggest jump of his career. His remarkable 2.31m clearance at the 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar not only earned him the gold medal but also established a new Indian national record, surpassing the previous mark of 2.29m held by Tejaswin Shankar since 2018.
The achievement made Kushare the first Indian high jumper to clear the 2.30m barrier, reinforcing his position among Asia’s leading jumpers ahead of a crucial international season.
A Perfectly Timed Breakthrough
The 31-year-old athlete displayed impressive consistency throughout the competition. After comfortably negotiating the early heights, he cleared 2.19m, 2.22m, 2.25m and 2.27m before taking on the historic 2.31m bar. After two unsuccessful attempts, Kushare delivered a flawless jump on his third and final try, creating one of the finest moments in Indian athletics this year.
He later attempted 2.35m, but could not go past the height. Nevertheless, the national record had already been rewritten.

Unlike many track and field events where athletes often reach their peak in their early or mid-twenties, high jump rewards technical precision, rhythm and years of experience. Kushare’s latest success highlights how mastering technique can compensate for the natural decline in explosive power that comes with age.
His coach Jithin Thomas played a key tactical role by asking Kushare to skip 2.30m altogether and attack 2.31m directly. The strategy helped him avoid the psychological pressure attached to the long-standing national record and ultimately resulted in the historic clearance.

Kushare’s rise has been anything but overnight. Hailing from Deogaon in Maharashtra’s Nashik district, he began training with limited facilities, including makeshift landing pits. Over the years, steady improvement helped him emerge as India’s leading high jumper.
