Sinner, Sabalenka cruise at Miami to keep Sunshine Double hopes alive

Miami: Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka delivered commanding performances to advance at the Miami Open on Monday, maintaining their bids for the coveted Indian Wells–Miami “Sunshine Double”.

Fresh from their title-winning runs at Indian Wells earlier this month, the in-form duo continued their momentum in Florida.

World No.1 Sabalenka powered into the quarter-finals with a clinical 6-3, 6-4 victory over China’s Zheng Qinwen, dictating play with her aggressive baseline game and solid serving. The Belarusian, defending the Miami crown she won last year, will next face American Hailey Baptiste in the last eight.

Sabalenka is aiming to become only the fifth woman to complete the Indian Wells–Miami double, joining an elite group that includes Steffi Graf, Kim Clijsters, Victoria Azarenka and Iga Swiatek.

In the men’s draw, second seed Sinner was equally dominant, easing past France’s Corentin Moutet 6-1, 6-4 to reach the last 16. The Italian, chasing a second Miami title after his 2024 triumph, controlled the match throughout and will now take on American Alex Michelsen for a place in the quarter-finals.

Elsewhere, defending champion Jakub Mensik crashed out after a gruelling three-set defeat to Frances Tiafoe, highlighting a day that saw several seeded players exit early.

With both Sinner and Sabalenka advancing comfortably, the spotlight now turns to whether the in-form pair can complete the rare Sunshine Double and extend their impressive hard-court run.
