The women’s freestyle competition at the 2026 European U23 Wrestling Championships showcased Europe’s brightest young talents as wrestlers battled for continental supremacy in Zrenjanin, Serbia. Held from March 11 to 13, the championship featured intense action across ten weight categories, highlighting the next generation of elite women wrestlers in Europe.

From dominant technical victories to dramatic last-minute turnarounds, the tournament produced several memorable moments and confirmed the rising strength of women’s wrestling across the continent.

Dominant Champions Across Weight Categories

Several wrestlers stamped their authority on the mat with commanding performances in their respective divisions.

Among the standout champions were Oleksandra Khomenets of Ukraine, who captured the 53kg title, displaying exceptional control and tactical maturity throughout the tournament. In the 65kg category, Moldova’s Irina Ringaci showcased her class with a series of impressive victories to claim gold.

Turkey also enjoyed strong success with wrestlers like Bediha Gun and Elif Yesilirmak producing confident performances to stand on the top of the podium.

Meanwhile, Andreea Ana of Romania continued her reputation as one of Europe’s most promising wrestlers by dominating the 57kg division, using quick takedowns and strong defensive technique to outclass her opponents.

Tactical Battles and Dramatic Moments

The finals saw several closely contested bouts where a single move often determined the result. Wrestlers relied on speed, technical superiority and strategic counters to gain crucial points.

A coach observing the competition remarked:

“At the U23 level you already see world-class wrestling. Many of these athletes will soon be challenging for medals at the senior European and World Championships.”

Fans were treated to a mixture of technical superiority wins, falls, and dramatic last-minute scoring moves, underlining the depth of talent in European women’s wrestling.

A Launchpad for Future Stars

The U23 European Championships have long been regarded as a key stepping stone toward global success. Many former champions have gone on to win medals at the World Championships and the Olympic Games.

With emerging stars from Ukraine, Turkey, Romania and Moldova making their mark, the 2026 edition once again confirmed that the future of women’s wrestling in Europe is in strong hands.

As one young medalist said after her victory:

“Winning at this level means everything. It’s the start of a bigger dream — to become a world and Olympic champion.”

The competition in Serbia not only crowned new champions but also introduced a new generation of athletes ready to dominate the international wrestling stage in the years ahead.
