Ahmedabad: India’s historic triumph in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 was not only a milestone for the team but also a defining moment for head coach Gautam Gambhir, who etched his name in cricket history by becoming the first individual to win the tournament both as a player and as a coach.
Under Gambhir’s fearless leadership, India defeated New Zealand national cricket team by a commanding 96 runs in the final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday to clinch their third T20 World Cup title.
The victory also made India the first nation to win the tournament three times and the first host country to lift the trophy.
For Gambhir, the triumph carried special significance. He was part of the Indian team that won the inaugural ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2007 and has now repeated the feat from the dugout as coach nearly two decades later.
Fearless philosophy behind success
After the final, Gambhir revealed that India’s success was built on a bold and uncompromising philosophy.
According to him, playing safe was never part of the plan in the fast-paced T20 format.
“The plan was very simple. I believe in high risk, high reward. In T20 cricket, if you start fearing defeat, you will never win. I would rather see the team get all out for 100 than play safe for 150,” Gambhir said.
He stressed that India stuck to this attacking approach even after suffering a heavy defeat against South Africa national cricket team earlier in the tournament.
“After that loss, all our matches were must-win games, but our ideology never changed. If you keep playing that fearless brand of cricket, you give yourself the best chance to win big tournaments,” he added.
A historic run of success
The T20 World Cup victory is also Gambhir’s second major ICC triumph as coach after guiding India to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 title last year. The back-to-back trophies underline India’s dominance in world cricket under his tenure.
Tribute to mentors and support system
Despite the historic achievement, Gambhir credited several key figures for shaping India’s success.
He dedicated the title to former India coach Rahul Dravid, acknowledging the strong foundation laid during Dravid’s tenure. He also praised VVS Laxman for his work at the National Cricket Academy and selection chief Ajit Agarkar for backing the team with honest decisions.
Gambhir further thanked Jay Shah, the current ICC chairman and former BCCI secretary, for showing faith in him when he was appointed as India’s head coach in 2024 despite having no prior experience in the role.
“He trusted me with this job when I had never coached a franchise or any team before. That belief meant a lot,” Gambhir said.
A legacy sealed
With India lifting their third T20 World Cup trophy and Gambhir achieving a unique double as both player and coach, the victory marks the beginning of a new chapter in Indian cricket—one defined by fearless strategy, bold decision-making and unwavering belief.
