Alexandra Eala delivered one of the biggest shocks of the week at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, dismantling Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in straight sets to book her place in the third round and etch her name into the record books.

The 20-year-old Filipina produced a commanding performance on Centre Court, winning 6-1, 7-6 after dictating play from the very first game.

Dominant Start, Nerve-Testing Finish

Fresh off a first-round win over Hailey Baptiste, Eala entered the match as the underdog. But she flipped the script immediately, suffocating Paolini’s groundstrokes and racing to a 6-1 first-set victory.

In the second set, Eala surged to a 5-3 lead and appeared set for a routine finish. However, tension crept in as she squandered three match points. Paolini forced a tie-break, but Eala regained composure to close out the match 7-6, sealing one of the biggest wins of her young career.

The victory marked her third win over a top-10 opponent on the WTA Tour.

Record Broken: Surpassing Naomi Osaka

According to OptaAce, Eala has now become the youngest Asian player to claim top-10 victories at multiple Tier I/WTA-1000 events.

She achieved the milestone at 20 years and 268 days, surpassing Naomi Osaka, who had previously held the record at 20 years and 350 days.

Eala’s earlier top-10 breakthroughs came at the 2025 Miami Open, where she defeated Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek en route to a sensational semi-final run.

Her Miami results in 2025 were as follows:

R128: def. Katy Volynets 6-3, 7-6

R64: def. Jelena Ostapenko 7-6, 7-5

R32: def. Madison Keys 6-4, 6-2

R16: def. Paula Badosa (walkover)

Quarter-finals: def. Iga Swiatek 6-2, 7-5

Semi-finals: lost to Jessica Pegula 6-7, 7-5, 3-6

That Miami campaign remains a defining moment in her rise, and she now has 390 ranking points to defend there this year.

“A Lot of Learnings, A Lot of Maturity”

Reflecting on her whirlwind start to 2026 — which has included appearances at the ASB Classic, Kooyong Classic, Australian Open, Philippine Women’s Open, Qatar Open and now Dubai — Eala acknowledged the growth she has experienced over the past year.

“As the Miami anniversary comes up, I would be coming up on one year of full, really full just WTA tournaments,” she said. “So I think that comes with a lot of learnings as well, a lot of maturity.”

She also admitted the attention has intensified.

“2026 has brought me a lot of love and a lot of attention from the fans. It does come with its set of struggles and sacrifices. But I need to remind myself that this is what I’ve been working my whole life for.”

Next Up: Cirstea Challenge

Eala will now face Romania’s Sorana Cirstea in the third round.

Cirstea arrives in strong form, riding a seven-match winning streak after capturing the Transylvania Open and winning her first two matches in Dubai. The Romanian also holds a psychological edge, having defeated Eala in their only previous meeting at the 2024 Madrid Open.

For Eala, however, confidence is soaring. With three top-10 wins already on her résumé and a historic record now secured, the Filipina is rapidly proving that her breakthrough season was no fluke.

If her performance against Paolini is any indication, she is no longer just a rising star — she is becoming a serious contender on the WTA stage.
