Belgium’s Late Surge Hands India 3-1 Defeat In FIH Pro League

Hosts Hold Firm Before Fourth-Quarter Collapse
India suffered a 3-1 defeat to Belgium in their FIH Pro League encounter at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, as the visitors struck twice in the final quarter to seal victory in an otherwise closely fought contest.
The match remained evenly poised for three quarters, with both teams showcasing disciplined defense and structured build-up play. However, Belgium’s clinical finishing in the closing stages proved decisive, handing India a disappointing start to their campaign.
Onana Opens Scoring, Lakra Restores Parity
Belgium broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute through Nelson Onana, who capitalized on a well-worked move inside the circle to give the visitors the lead. India responded with determination and found the equalizer just six minutes later.
Shilanand Lakra brought the home crowd to life in the 29th minute, reacting sharply to a rebound from a penalty corner to slot the ball home and level the scores at 1-1 before halftime. The goal shifted momentum briefly in India’s favor as they pushed forward with confidence.
Late Belgian Blitz Decides The Contest
With the match finely balanced heading into the final quarter, Belgium raised the tempo and began to apply sustained pressure on India’s defense. Their persistence paid off in the 53rd minute when Thomas Crols found the back of the net to restore Belgium’s lead.
India attempted to chase the game, but gaps began to appear at the back. Arno Van Dessel added a third goal in the 57th minute, effectively putting the result beyond doubt and securing a 3-1 win for the reigning European powerhouse.
India Seek Improvements Ahead Of Next Fixture
While India showed resilience and competitive spirit for much of the contest, the inability to convert chances and maintain defensive solidity in the final quarter proved costly. The team will now look to regroup quickly and address key areas, particularly in closing out tight matches.
With several Pro League fixtures still to come, India will aim to bounce back strongly and regain momentum in the tournament.
