World Athletics Team Inspects Kalinga Stadium as India Pushes for 2028 World Indoor Championships

Bhubaneswar Emerges as Strong Contender to Host Global Indoor Athletics Showcase

A high-level delegation from World Athletics, along with officials from the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), visited Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar as part of India’s bid to host the 2028 World Athletics Indoor Championships. The visit marks a crucial step in the bidding process, with the international body assessing the venue’s readiness to stage one of the most prestigious events in global athletics.

During the inspection, the delegation reviewed the state-of-the-art Indoor Athletics Centre and associated infrastructure within the Kalinga Stadium complex. The focus was on technical compliance, athlete facilities, competition areas and overall operational capability required for hosting a world-class indoor championship.
Senior officials also held discussions with Odisha government representatives and AFI officials, highlighting India’s growing ambition to become a regular host of major international sporting events. Kalinga Stadium has already built a strong reputation by successfully hosting international athletics meets and multi-sport events, strengthening its credentials as a potential host venue.

The indoor facility, featuring a 200-metre track and specialised areas for field events, is among the most advanced in the region. Its development reflects a broader national strategy to boost athletics infrastructure and provide Indian athletes with exposure to elite competition standards.

Latest Update

With the completion of the World Athletics inspection, India’s bid for the 2028 World Indoor Championships has entered a decisive evaluation phase. Feedback from the visiting delegation will play a key role in the final decision on the host city. If approved, Bhubaneswar would become one of the few Asian cities to host the event, marking a landmark achievement for Indian athletics and further establishing Kalinga Stadium as a global sports destination.
