Former world No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas has revealed that a prolonged battle with injury forced him to seriously reconsider his future in professional tennis, as he prepares to begin his new season at the United Cup in Australia.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Tsitsipas admitted that recurring back pain over several months left him uncertain about his ability to even finish matches. “My biggest concern was whether I could finish a match,” the Greek said, describing the period as one of the most mentally challenging phases of his career.

The situation worsened after his US Open exit, when the pain became so intense that he struggled to walk for two days. “That’s when you reconsider the future of your career,” Tsitsipas said, offering a rare glimpse into the emotional toll of life on tour.

Encouragingly, the 27-year-old says his condition has improved following intensive treatment and rehabilitation. He recently completed five weeks of training without pain, a milestone he described as the most positive sign he could have hoped for. “My biggest win would be to not worry about finishing matches,” he added.

Tsitsipas will lead Greece alongside Maria Sakkari at the United Cup, where they face Japan and Great Britain in the group stage. The team event offers him a fresh start and a chance to rebuild confidence after a testing period.(Source -Times of India)
