The King’s Court: Vizag Braces for History as Kohli Chases a Century Hat-Trick in Decisive ODI

The stakes could not be higher. At the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam, the stage is set for a winner-takes-all spectacle as India lock horns with South Africa in the third and final One Day International. With the series perfectly poised at 1-1, the air is thick with anticipation, but a singular, feverish excitement dominates the narrative: Virat Kohli and the quest for a historic hat-trick of ODI centuries.

After stunning back-to-back tons in Ranchi and Raipur, Kohli returns to his fortress—a venue where he averages an astronomical 97.83 in seven ODIs, a record that has fans and organisers alike labelling him ‘Bradmanesque’. This monumental form has breathed life into the bilateral series, causing a ticket frenzy in a city that initially struggled for sales. Following his heroics, the online ticket inventory vanished in minutes, securing a full-house and transforming the decider into a veritable Kohli spectacle.

The Weight of Expectation

The match is a fascinating battle between India’s top-order brilliance and South Africa’s relentless batting depth. India’s batting line-up, featuring the phenomenal form of Kohli, the stability of Ruturaj Gaikwad (fresh off a maiden ton), and the power of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, has been a force of nature. Yet, their inability to defend a score of 358 in the second ODI has highlighted a glaring issue: a struggling bowling attack grappling with the twin demons of poor execution and the omnipresent dew factor. Fast bowlers like Prasidh Krishna have been expensive, and the pressure is immense on stand-in skipper KL Rahul to find a solution.

South Africa, rebounding strongly from their initial loss, carry vital momentum. Temba Bavuma’s Proteas have shown fearlessness in the chase, capitalising on India’s bowling woes. However, their campaign has been hampered by injury concerns to key players, including pacer Nandre Burger and Tony de Zorzi, potentially forcing the management to bring in Ryan Rickelton and Ottneil Baartman. The Proteas will rely heavily on their dynamic attack, led by Marco Jansen, to try and breach India’s superstar top-order.

The Toss: A Tipping Point

As has been the trend throughout this high-scoring series, the conditions dictate the play, making the toss a crucial factor. The heavy presence of dew in the second innings has heavily favoured the chasing team. While Vizag is a coastal town, groundstaff have been actively covering the outfield, and early evening haze suggests the wet ball will once again be a challenge for the side bowling second.
India, who have lost 20 straight ODI tosses, will be desperate for captain Rahul to finally call correctly. The toss could determine which team gets to maximise the new ball and set an above-par total, or which team is condemned to manage the wet ball against a relentless chase.

Ultimately, however, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on one man. The city of Visakhapatnam—from the thronging crowds at the airport to the sold-out stadium seats—is not just here for a series decider; they are here for a pilgrimage. They are waiting for their King to raise his bat for the third time in a week, to convert this phenomenal purple patch into a legendary run, and to single-handedly deliver the series trophy.
Who is backed for the win? Given the incredible historical advantage and the sheer force of current form, the city’s expectation is a powerful and singular vote. India, powered by the unstoppable force that is Virat Kohli, is the resounding favourite to clinch the series.
Would you like me to find out the confirmed playing XIs and the match result once the game is over?
