South Africa Raise Pitch Alarm Ahead of Guwahati Test: “If They Cut The Grass, It Will Make A Difference”

 Bhubaneswar:Bowling Coach Flags Pitch Concerns
South Africa’s bowling coach, Piet Botha, has expressed unease over the Guwahati wicket at Barsapara Stadium ahead of the second Test against India. While early signs suggest a batting-friendly surface, Botha warned that the amount of grass left on the pitch could crucially influence how the Test unfolds.

Battle for the Curator’s Decision
Botha admitted it is difficult to predict whether curators will trim the grass from the red-soil track before the match — a decision that, according to him, could make a substantial difference in the pitch’s behavior.

New Ball Could Play Early
Given the 9 am start for the Test, Botha believes the fresh morning conditions may favour the new ball. He cautioned that underlying moisture and cooler hours could give seamers an early advantage, though the dynamics will largely depend on how the pitch plays out.

Rabada’s Fitness Under Watch
Kagiso Rabada’s participation remains uncertain as he continues to be monitored for a rib injury. Botha confirmed that the final decision on his availability will be made within 24 hours.

Harmer May Be Key If It Turns
Simon Harmer, who was instrumental in South Africa’s victory in Kolkata, is fully fit. Botha highlighted that if the Guwahati pitch begins to spin early — especially with left-handers in India’s lineup — Harmer could pose a significant threat.

What’s At Stake for India
After criticism of the uneven bounce in Kolkata, India is reportedly pushing for a balanced Guwahati pitch with both pace and turn, according to BCCI sources.
