From ICU to Recovery: Iyer Faces Long Road Back to ODIs

Shreyas Iyer Doubtful for South Africa ODIs After Serious Spleen Injury

Indian vice-captain Shreyas Iyer continues his recovery after suffering a serious injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025. The injury, sustained while attempting a diving catch, resulted in a lacerated spleen and internal bleeding, requiring immediate hospitalization and a minor surgical procedure.

Iyer was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he was closely monitored. Reports indicated that his oxygen levels had dropped significantly, and he experienced a temporary loss of consciousness, underscoring the severity of the injury. After several days under observation, he was discharged from the hospital on November 1 and returned to India to continue his recovery at home.

In a recent social media post, Iyer expressed gratitude to fans and teammates, writing:
“Sun’s been a great therapy. Grateful to be back. Thanks for all the love and care.”

Despite this positive progress, Iyer remains doubtful for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, which begins November 30, 2025, at Ranchi, Raipur, and Visakhapatnam. Medical experts indicate he will need more than a month to regain match fitness, and the BCCI has confirmed they will not rush his return, prioritizing his long-term health.

Cricketing experts and doctors have highlighted the hidden risks of spleen injuries, which can lead to serious internal bleeding without immediate outward symptoms. Dr. Anshuman Kaushal from Apollo Hospitals, Delhi, noted that swift medical attention is critical, as these injuries can be life-threatening if untreated.

As Shreyas Iyer continues his rehabilitation, the cricketing community and fans await further updates on his return to international cricket. His focus remains on recovery, and the BCCI has assured that his health will remain the top priority before considering him for selection again.
