India A produced a spirited bowling effort to restrict South Africa A to 299 for nine on the opening day of the first unofficial Test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 1 in Bengaluru. The day belonged to the bowlers after South Africa A’s solid start was undone by an inspired Indian fightback led by off-spinner Tanush Kotian.

South Africa A Make Confident Start

Opting to bat first, the South Africa A lost opener Lesego Senokwane cheaply (6/1). Therafter, Jordan Hermann and Zubayr Hamza steadied the ship. The pair negotiated India A’s bowling attack and stitched together a 132-run stand for the 2nd wicket. Hermann looked fluent for his 71, while Hamza added a well-compiled 66, laying the platform for a big first-innings total.

Kotian Spins India A Back Into The Contest

Just as the visitors seemed to be taking control, India A’s bowlers clawed back. Kotian turned the tide with a superb spell of off-spin, claiming four wickets and breaking through the middle order. His variations and control troubled the South African batters, who struggled to rotate strike against spin. The rest of the attack maintained discipline, chipping in with crucial breakthroughs to peg the visitors back. Kotian managed 4/83 from 23 overs.

Lower Order Resists Late Collapse

South Africa A were 5/197 at one stage before they offered resistance. Rubin Hermann and Tiaan van Vuuren stitched a solid 72-run stand for the sixth wicket. Vuuren continued to stall India, helping his side get past 280 before perishing for 46. Earlier, Rubin managed 54 runs.

Pant’s Return Adds Spark To India A

All eyes were on Rishabh Pant, who marked his return to competitive cricket as India A’s captain. This was Pant’s first appearance since the 4th England vs India Test this year where he saw his foot get fractured. Since then, Pant didn’t play any competitive game. The India A skipper did a reasonable job as captain. Day 2 will be crucial for the hosts.

What Lies Ahead

India A will resume play on Day 2 looking to wrap up the South African innings quickly before mounting a strong reply with the bat. With conditions still favourable for batting, the hosts will aim to seize early control, while the visitors will look to push their score beyond 300 and apply pressure on India A’s top order.
