Wembanyama Erupts for 40 as Spurs Crush Mavericks in Season Opener

After months away recovering from shoulder surgery for deep vein thrombosis, Victor Wembanyama made his return to the NBA hardwood — and what a statement he delivered. The 21-year-old San Antonio Spurs superstar exploded for 40 points, powering his team to a commanding 125–92 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in their season opener.

It was Wembanyama’s fifth career 40-point game, an electric display that erased any doubts about his fitness after an eight-month layoff. By halftime, he already had 21 points — a mix of powerful dunks, silky mid-range shots, and his trademark defensive presence.

The towering Frenchman looked every bit the generational talent the league expected him to be when he debuted in 2023.

Flagg’s Tough Start on a Big Stage

The night, however, wasn’t as kind to Cooper Flagg, Dallas’ much-hyped number one overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. The 18-year-old made history as the second-youngest starter in NBA history — behind only LeBron James — but nerves and inexperience showed early.

Flagg didn’t register a basket until the second half, finishing with 10 points, a modest start in what’s expected to be a long and promising career.

Despite flashes of energy, Flagg struggled to match Wembanyama’s dominance — a reminder of how steep the NBA learning curve can be for even the most talented rookies.

Spurs Set the Tone Early

San Antonio’s ball movement, defensive discipline, and Wembanyama’s all-around brilliance made the difference. The Mavericks, meanwhile, never found rhythm — unable to contain the Spurs’ transition game or their star’s sheer reach and creativity.

Wembanyama’s return also reignited talk of the Spurs’ potential resurgence in the West — with his performance hinting at a team ready to compete far earlier than expected.

Around the League

Elsewhere, Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe made history with 34 points in a thrilling 117–116 win over Boston — the third-highest debut scoring mark in NBA history.
And in New York, OG Anunoby shone with 24 points and 14 rebounds as the Knicks downed the Cleveland Cavaliers 119–111, marking a victorious debut for new coach Mike Brown.
