From Frustration to Reprimand – What Led to Sidra Amin’s ICC Punishment?

Bhubaneswar: Pakistan opener Sidra Amin has found herself in the spotlight for the wrong reasons following the ICC Women’s World Cup clash against India. The International Cricket Council has reprimanded the right-hander and handed her one demerit point for breaching the Level 1 Code of Conduct during the heated contest.

The incident took place in the 40th over of Pakistan’s innings, when Sidra, frustrated after being dismissed by India’s Sneh Rana, struck her bat forcefully onto the pitch — an action that fell under Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct. This article deals with “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures during an international match.”

According to the ICC, Sidra admitted to her offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Vanessa Bowden, eliminating the need for a formal hearing. As this was her first offence within 24 months, the punishment remained light — a reprimand and one demerit point on her record.

Under ICC regulations, Level 1 offences are the least severe breaches, carrying a range of penalties from an official warning to a fine of up to 50% of the match fee and one or two demerit points. However, accumulation of four or more demerit points within two years can lead to a suspension.

While the punishment doesn’t directly affect Sidra’s participation in upcoming matches, it serves as a cautionary reminder about maintaining composure on the field. The Pakistani opener, known for her consistency with the bat, will be keen to let her performances do the talking in future games — and leave the emotions in check.
