ICC Schedules Hearings After Complaints From BCCI And PCB Over Asia Cup Player Conduct

Dubai – The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that formal disciplinary hearings have been scheduled for Thursday, September 25, to address the spate of player complaints filed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) following their high-voltage clashes in the Asia Cup 2025.

BCCI Complaint: Provocative On-Field Gestures

The BCCI’s complaint targets two Pakistan cricketers for their actions during the Super Four encounter on September 21:

  • Haris Rauf: Accused of making provocative, politically charged gestures near the boundary, including an action mimicking a crashing aircraft and signalling “6-0” toward Indian fans.
  • Sahibzada Farhan: Cited for a celebration where he used his bat to mimic a gun-firing gesture after reaching his half-century.

The hearing for the BCCI’s complaint against Rauf and Farhan will be presided over by Match Referee Andy Pycroft.

PCB Complaint: Political Remarks from Indian Skipper

In a counter-complaint, the PCB has lodged charges against India captain Suryakumar Yadav for his post-match comments following the September 14 league fixture.

  • Allegation: The PCB takes issue with Yadav’s remarks, in which he expressed solidarity with the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and dedicated the team’s victory to the Indian Armed Forces. The PCB alleges these comments were political in nature and violated the ICC Code of Conduct.
  • Adjudication: A separate hearing has been scheduled for this complaint, which will be adjudicated by ICC Elite Panel Referee Richie Richardson.

Adding Fuel to the Fire: ACC Chairman Mohsin Naqvi

Escalating the tensions beyond the field of play, Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi—who also serves as the PCB Chairman and Pakistan’s Interior Minister—posted a cryptic video on social media platform ‘X’ on Wednesday. The video featured a slow-motion clip of football legend Cristiano Ronaldo making a gesture that some interpreted as an aircraft suddenly crashing, appearing to support the controversial gesture made by Haris Rauf on the field. Given that Naqvi is known for making provocative statements against India, his post adds another layer of political friction to the controversy. With India confirmed for the Asia Cup final on September 28, Naqvi’s involvement casts a doubt on whether the Indian team will share the dais with the ACC Chairman during the closing ceremony.

Expected ICC Disciplinary Action and Final Showdown

With hearings set for Thursday, the ICC is looking to swiftly address the issues before the potential grand finale. The players involved may face sanctions if the match referees find them guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct. The escalating tensions and disciplinary proceedings also serve as a dramatic precursor to a possible third face-off between the arch-rivals in the Asia Cup final on September 28, depending on the results of the remaining Super Four matches.
