Sindhu Stunned, Prannoy and Sen Shine at Hong Kong Open 2025

Bhubaneswar : In a dramatic upset at the Hong Kong Open 2025, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu exited early, losing in a thrilling three-game battle to Denmark’s unseeded Line Christophersen. Sindhu took the first game 21-15 and seemed poised to maintain control but faltered in the close second and third games, 16-21, 19-21. The match, which saw both players deadlocked at 19-19 in the decider, ultimately swung in favor of Christophersen, marking Sindhu’s sixth first-round exit on the BWF World Tour this year.

While Sindhu’s early exit was unexpected, India’s men’s singles players lit up the courts with stellar performances. HS Prannoy stunned higher-ranked opponents, notably defeating China’s Lu Guangzu 21-17, 21-14 in straight sets. Lakshya Sen battled fiercely to win a nail-biting three-game match, prevailing 22-20, 16-21, 21-15 over Chinese Taipei’s Wang Tzu-wei. Kiran George also advanced with a confident straight-game victory. The rising Indian men’s contingent showed resilience and promise ahead in the tournament.

Sindhu’s recent form has raised questions about balancing workload and recovery, with her coaching team expected to reassess her schedule to regain her peak. Meanwhile, the men’s squad is emerging as India’s strong hope at the Hong Kong Coliseum, showcasing the depth and talent in Indian badminton heading into the season’s closing tournaments.

This Hong Kong Open stage sets the tone for a thrilling battle as India looks to convert opportunities amidst stiff competition from global contenders. With Prannoy, Sen, and George moving forward, the spotlight now shifts heavily onto them to carry the Indian flag high after Sindhu’s early surprise exit.
