New York City- Defending champion Jannik Sinner extended his remarkable hardcourt Grand Slam winning streak to 24 matches on Saturday, but not without a fight. The Italian star overcame stiff resistance from Denis Shapovalov to power into the US Open fourth round with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 win.
Sinner’s Resilience on Display
In a match that tested the world No. 1, Shapovalov put on a strong display in the first set, taking advantage of four double faults from Sinner to snatch the opener. However, the defending champion’s composure prevailed. Sinner breezed through the second set and, despite falling behind 0-3 in the third, he rebounded in spectacular fashion, claiming six straight games to take control of the match. A frustrated Shapovalov could only watch as Sinner broke again in the fourth, eventually putting the Canadian away.
In the post-match press conference, Sinner acknowledged the difficulty of the contest, stating, “Very tough match today. I know Denis a long time… He started off very well. I just tried to stay there mentally.” Sinner will next face the winner of the match between Tommy Paul and Alexander Bublik.
Auger-Aliassime Pulls Off Major Upset
In another significant result on Saturday, Felix Auger-Aliassime battled back from a set down to stun world No. 3 Alexander Zverev 4-6, 7-6(7), 6-4, 6-4. The victory marks one of the biggest wins of Auger-Aliassime’s career and sees him return to the fourth round at Flushing Meadows for the first time since his semifinal run in 2021.
