The Australian cricket team etched its name in ODI history books once again after scoring 431/2 versus South Africa in the 3rd and final ODI of the three-match series in Mackay. The match held on Sunday, August 24, saw the Aussies post their 2nd-highest score in ODI cricket. Thereafter, having bowled out South Africa for 155 runs, Australia clinched a superb 276-run win.
Interestingly, the score of 431/2 by the Australia was their 3rd instance of surpassing 400 runs in ODIs.
Openers Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh hammered centuries for Australia, adding an opening stands of 250 runs. Head registered 142 from 103 balls. Marsh managed 100 from 106 balls. Thereafter, Cameron Green (118*) struck the 2nd-fastest hundred for the Australia (by balls). His 47-ball ton in addition to Alex Carey’s 50* saw the record score be possible.
Meanwhile, Australia’s highest total in ODIs have come against the Proteas. They had hit 434/4 in Johannesburg in 2006. Despite that, SA had gone on to chase down 435 runs, scoring 438/9. Herschelle Gibbs led the show for the Proteas, scoring a majestic 175. Mark Boucher did the finisher’s job to perfection.
Australia’s 3rd and fourth best scores in ODIs came against Afghanistan (417/6) and Netherlands (399/8) respectively. Both these scores came in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 and 2013 respectively. Australia went on to win both games by significant margins.
