South Africa can inflict a whitewash on Australia when the two sides meet in the 3rd and final ODI on Sunday, August 24, at the Great Barrier Reef Arena, Mackay. The visitors have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series and is one shy of winning the series 3-0. South Africa, who have won 5 successive bilateral ODI series against the Aussies, won the first ODI of the ongoing series by 98 runs in Cairns. They won the 2nd encounter by 84 runs in Mackay.
As per ESPNcricinfo, the two teams have met each other in 15 bilateral ODI series to date. South Africa have won 9 series, including the 2025 tour. Australia have won 5 ODI series. Another two bilateral series have been drawn. In terms of the H2H record, the two teams have faced each other 112 times. South Africa have claimed 57 wins compared to Australia’s 51. Three games have been tied with one match not having any result.
Interestingly, SA are aiming to blank Australia in a bilateral ODI series for the 3rd time in their history. The last time the Proteas whitewashed Australia was in March 2020 at home. They won the three-match series 3-0.
Earlier in October 2016, SA claimed a 5-match series versus Australia at home 5-0.
This could be the 3rd time SA can blank the Aussies in a bilateral ODI series. And also the first time this can be attained by them on Australian soil.
Instances of SA whitewashing Australia in a ODI bilateral series:
- South Africa 3-0 Australia in 2020
- South Africa 5-0 Australia in 2016
