Sathish Kumar: A Return to Sports
Sathish Kumar and Weightlifting
Sathish Kumar Sivalingam comes from Sattuvachari, a small hamlet in Tamil Nadu鈥檚 Vellore district. What began as a humble village gradually became a hub for weightlifting, giving Sathish an opportunity to pursue the sport despite limited resources.
His family depended on agriculture and other work for a living, but Sathish developed a strong passion for weightlifting. He began competing at the junior level and won national medals, including gold at the Junior National Weightlifting Competition in 2005.
Sathish Kumar鈥檚 Early Journey
Sathish continued training and eventually moved into senior-level competition. In 2010, he competed at the Senior National level in the 77kg category. Although he did not win a medal at the time, he continued working towards his goal despite financial difficulties.
He later received support from his family and people around him, which helped him continue his weightlifting journey.
Sathish Kumar and Commonwealth Games
Sathish鈥檚 major breakthrough came at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He won gold in the men鈥檚 77kg category and set a Commonwealth Games record with a 149kg snatch.
The achievement brought national recognition and was followed by the Arjuna Award in 2015. Sathish then continued competing at the highest level while dealing with the physical demands of the sport.
Sathish Kumar鈥檚 2018 Gold
At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Sathish successfully defended his title. He won another gold medal in the 77kg category with a total lift of 317kg.
His achievement made him a two-time Commonwealth Games champion, following his 2014 Glasgow victory.
Sathish Kumar and Injury
Sathish鈥檚 journey was not without setbacks. An injury affected his preparation and made competing increasingly difficult. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, he was still dealing with a thigh injury but managed to win gold.
The pain and physical challenges eventually forced him to reconsider his future in competitive weightlifting.
Sathish Kumar鈥檚 Return to Sports
After stepping away from competitive weightlifting, Sathish decided that sport would still remain an important part of his life. Instead of continuing only as an athlete, he began exploring ways to contribute to sport through training and development.
His experience as an international weightlifter helped him understand the importance of proper coaching, scientific training, sports facilities and rehabilitation.
Sathish Kumar鈥檚 New Role
Sathish began working towards creating opportunities for young athletes. He focused on sharing his knowledge and experience with students and aspiring sportspersons.
His work includes training and supporting athletes while encouraging them to understand the importance of sports science, nutrition, recovery and disciplined preparation.
Sathish Kumar and Sports Development
For Sathish, returning to sports meant taking his experience beyond competition. His journey from a small village in Tamil Nadu to Commonwealth Games gold showed him the value of proper opportunities and support.
He now hopes to contribute to the development of athletes and help more young people take up sport seriously.
Sathish Kumar鈥檚 Sporting Journey
Sathish Kumar鈥檚 career reflects both achievement and resilience. From winning gold at two consecutive Commonwealth Games to overcoming injuries and finding a new role in sport, his journey has taken a different direction.
His return to sports is not about another medal. It is about using his experience to help create opportunities for the next generation of athletes.
A New Chapter for Sathish Kumar
Once a sportsperson, always a sportsperson. Sathish Kumar continues to remain connected with the sporting world, now with a focus on guiding and supporting young athletes.
His journey shows that an athlete鈥檚 contribution to sport can continue even after competitive competition comes to an end.
