Turkish artistic gymnast Ferhat Arıcan has already rewritten his nation’s sporting history, but the veteran athlete believes his greatest personal mission is still unfinished. The Olympic bronze medallist has revealed that he has no intention of retiring until he secures a medal at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships—the only major title absent from his impressive collection.

Arıcan, who made history at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games by winning bronze in the men’s parallel bars, became the first Turkish gymnast to claim an Olympic medal. Since then, he has added several international honours while continuing to lead Turkey’s rise in world gymnastics. Yet, despite his achievements, the World Championships podium remains his biggest unfinished objective.

A Career Built on Historic Firsts

The 32-year-old has spent more than a decade helping transform Turkish gymnastics into a competitive force on the international stage. From becoming Turkey’s first male artistic gymnast to compete at the Olympics in Rio 2016 to winning the country’s maiden Olympic gymnastics medal in Tokyo, Arıcan has consistently broken new ground.

Even at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he narrowly missed another medal by finishing fifth in the parallel bars final, Arıcan proved he remains among the world’s elite competitors.

The Medal That Still Matters

While Olympic success fulfilled one lifelong dream, Arıcan believes a World Championships medal would complete his sporting legacy. He admitted that this ambition continues to motivate him through demanding training sessions and international competitions.

His determination reflects not only personal ambition but also a desire to continue inspiring the next generation of Turkish gymnasts. Over the past few years, Turkey has produced several world-class athletes, and Arıcan believes the country’s growing success is the result of years of consistent investment and belief in gymnastics.

An Inspiration Beyond Medals

Beyond his own achievements, Arıcan has embraced the role of mentor and leader within Turkish gymnastics. His success has helped raise the profile of the sport in the country, encouraging young athletes to dream of competing on the Olympic and World Championship stages.

Although injuries and fierce international competition have presented challenges, the experienced gymnast remains convinced that he can still compete for medals against the world’s best.

Career Highlights

Olympic Games: Bronze medal – Men’s Parallel Bars (Tokyo 2020)

Olympic Record: First Turkish gymnast to win an Olympic medal

Paris 2024 Olympics: Finished 5th in the Parallel Bars final (15.100 points)

Olympic Appearances: Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024

Multiple medals at European Championships and FIG World Cup events.

What’s Next?

With the next World Championships on the horizon, Arıcan’s focus is firmly on achieving the one accomplishment that has so far escaped him. Having already secured Olympic recognition and established himself as one of Turkey’s greatest gymnasts, he now wants to leave the sport with a complete set of major international medals.

If he succeeds, Arıcan will further cement his status as one of the most influential figures in the history of Turkish gymnastics.
