Referee or Coach? Wrestling Trials Controversy Puts Spotlight on Fair Play

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has found itself dealing with an unusual controversy after a senior referee allegedly stepped out of his official role and into a coaching position during the Asian Games wrestling selection trials in Lucknow.

The incident involved referee Jaibir Singh, who was officiating at the trials before reportedly removing his referee uniform and standing in the corner to guide his son during the men’s Greco-Roman 130kg final. The move has sparked questions about impartiality and professional conduct at one of India’s most important wrestling selection events.

According to reports, Singh’s son was competing in a decisive bout that carried significant implications for future international representation. Although Singh was not serving as an official during that particular match, his presence in the coaching corner drew attention because of his role as an accredited referee at the same competition.

The Wrestling Federation of India has since issued a show-cause notice, asking Singh to explain his actions. The federation believes that officials must maintain complete neutrality and avoid situations that could create even the appearance of a conflict of interest.

The controversy has reignited discussions about governance and transparency in Indian wrestling. Selection trials are often closely watched because they determine who earns the opportunity to represent the country at major international events, including the Asian Games. As a result, every decision and action on the competition floor is expected to meet the highest standards of fairness.

Singh, however, has defended his actions, stating that he had already completed his refereeing duties and was preparing to leave the venue when he noticed his son competing without a coach in the corner. He admitted that stepping in may have been a mistake but maintained that he acted as a parent rather than an official.

Ironically, the match did not end in celebration for the family, as Singh’s son failed to secure victory in the final. Nevertheless, the incident has become one of the biggest talking points to emerge from the trials.

The WFI is expected to review Singh’s response before deciding whether any disciplinary action is necessary. Regardless of the final verdict, the episode has highlighted the importance of clearly separating personal relationships from official responsibilities in elite sport.

As Indian wrestling prepares for major international competitions, the federation will be keen to ensure that selection processes remain transparent, credible and free from any perception of bias.
