The women’s 800m at the Stockholm Diamond League delivered a race for the ages as Switzerland’s Audrey Werro stunned Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson to claim the biggest victory of her career and announce herself as a genuine contender for global dominance.

In one of the fastest races ever run over the distance, Werro crossed the line in a remarkable 1:53.98, setting a new Swiss national record and becoming the third-fastest woman in history over 800 metres. The 22-year-old’s performance was enough to edge Britain’s Hodgkinson, who finished second in 1:54.33, a new British record and another world-class mark.

The race was expected to be another showcase for Hodgkinson, who has been in outstanding form throughout the season. Instead, Werro produced a fearless run, matching the pace from the start before unleashing a powerful finish in the closing stages to secure a memorable victory.

Record-Breaking Night in Stockholm

The Stockholm meeting witnessed two historic performances in the same race:

Audrey Werro (Switzerland) – 1:53.98

Keely Hodgkinson (Great Britain) – 1:54.33

Werro’s time moved her to third on the all-time list, while Hodgkinson’s effort became the fastest ever by a British woman. Their performances also reignited discussion around Jarmila Kratochvílová’s long-standing world record of 1:53.28, set in 1983.

A Rivalry Taking Shape

The result marks a significant moment in women’s middle-distance running. Earlier this year, Hodgkinson had finished ahead of Werro on the global stage, but the Swiss athlete turned the tables in Stockholm with a composed and courageous display.

Werro’s victory demonstrates the rapid rise of a runner who has steadily improved over the last few seasons and now appears ready to challenge the sport’s biggest names on a consistent basis.

What This Means

With both athletes producing historically fast times, the women’s 800m is entering an exciting new era. Hodgkinson remains one of the favourites for major championships, but Werro’s breakthrough victory has added a new dimension to the event and created the prospect of a compelling rivalry throughout the remainder of the season.

If Stockholm was any indication, fans could be witnessing the beginning of a battle that pushes the event closer than ever to one of athletics’ most enduring world records.
