Indian athletics has been rocked by another doping controversy after women’s 1500m national record holder K.M. Deeksha reportedly tested positive for a banned substance, casting serious doubt over her participation in the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The 27-year-old middle-distance runner, regarded as one of India’s brightest track athletes, is understood to have returned an adverse result during a doping test. While officials are yet to reveal the exact substance involved, sources have confirmed that the athlete has been informed about the positive finding. The matter is now expected to move through the anti-doping process before a final verdict is reached.
The development comes as a significant setback for Indian athletics, especially with the Commonwealth Games scheduled from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
A Career-Defining Blow
Deeksha has been one of India’s leading middle-distance runners in recent years. She holds the national record in the women’s 1500m and has also won a silver medal at the National Games.
Her only competitive appearance in 2026 came at the Indian Open Athletics Series 2 in Jaipur on April 5, where she won the women’s 1500m race with a timing of 4:25.74. However, the performance was well outside the Athletics Federation of India’s Commonwealth Games qualification standard of 4:05.09.

Commonwealth Games Participation in Doubt
Even before the doping issue surfaced, Deeksha’s path to the Commonwealth Games was becoming difficult. She did not compete at the Federation Cup in Ranchi, a mandatory qualification event for athletes seeking selection unless granted special exemption by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).
The positive test has now created a much larger obstacle. If the anti-doping proceedings confirm the violation, Deeksha could face suspension and miss one of the biggest events of the year.
Growing Concern for Indian Athletics
The case once again highlights the challenges Indian athletics continues to face in its battle against doping. With major international competitions approaching, every such incident not only impacts an athlete’s career but also affects the country’s medal prospects and sporting reputation.
For now, the athletics community awaits further details regarding the substance involved and the outcome of the anti-doping investigation. Until an official decision is announced, Deeksha’s future on the track remains uncertain.
As Indian athletics prepares for Glasgow 2026, a cloud of uncertainty now hangs over one of its most accomplished middle-distance runners.
