Ben Shelton showed grit, nerve and resilience under pressure as he battled past Marcos Giron in a dramatic opening-round clash at the 2026 Hamburg Open, surviving a serious upset scare to keep his campaign alive on German clay.

For more than two hours, Shelton was forced into a tense and physically demanding contest against a fearless Giron, who refused to back down despite entering the main draw as a lucky loser. In the end, the world No. 6 held his nerve during a decisive third-set tiebreak to secure a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(3) victory. (reuters.com)

The match began confidently for Shelton, who looked in control during the opening set. His powerful left-handed serve and aggressive baseline play immediately placed Giron under pressure, allowing the American to claim the first set 6-3 with relative comfort. (sofascore.com)

But the momentum shifted quickly in the second set.

Giron, known for his fighting spirit and consistency from the baseline, gradually disrupted Shelton’s rhythm with intelligent returning and patient rallies. As Shelton’s error count began to rise, Giron seized his opportunity and levelled the contest by taking the second set 6-4. (tennisratio.com)

The deciding set turned into a tense battle of nerves. Both players held serve through a series of pressure-filled games, with Shelton occasionally showing signs of frustration as Giron continued forcing long exchanges on the clay surface.

At several moments, the second seed looked vulnerable.

However, when the match entered a final-set tiebreak, Shelton rediscovered his composure. The 23-year-old raised his level at precisely the right moment, delivering fearless serving and sharper shot-making to close out the breaker 7-3 and avoid an early exit. (reuters.com)

The victory carried added importance for Shelton because it marked his first win since capturing the Munich title earlier in the clay-court season. After recent early exits in Madrid and Rome, questions had begun emerging over his consistency heading into Roland Garros. (harianbasis.co)

Despite the uneven performance, Shelton’s fighting qualities once again stood out. Throughout his young career, the American has built a reputation for staying mentally strong during tight matches, particularly in deciding-set tiebreaks.

Fans inside the Rothenbaum Tennis Center witnessed a contest filled with momentum swings, emotional reactions and high-pressure moments. Giron earned praise for his relentless effort and refusal to allow Shelton easy points, while the second seed received loud support whenever he produced one of his trademark booming serves.

For Giron, the defeat was another painful near-miss in a season filled with close battles against higher-ranked opponents. The 32-year-old has repeatedly shown his ability to trouble elite players, even if results have not always gone his way. (reddit.com)

Shelton will now move into the next round carrying relief as much as confidence. The Hamburg Open represents an important final preparation event before the French Open begins, and surviving difficult matches like this could prove valuable for building momentum.

The American’s explosive game remains dangerous on any surface, but his growing ability to grind through difficult clay-court encounters may ultimately determine how far he can go during the European season.

For now, though, Shelton’s Hamburg campaign remains alive — even if Giron came painfully close to ending it.
