Indian shuttler Ashmita Chaliha secured a place in the women’s singles main draw of the Malaysia Masters Super 500 tournament after battling past Chinese Taipei’s Pai Yu-po in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old fought back strongly to register a 21-23, 21-16, 21-16 victory in a qualification match that lasted nearly an hour. Chaliha will now face Indonesia’s Thalita Ramadhani Wiryawan in the opening round of the main draw.
However, it was disappointment for fellow Indian shuttler Aakarshi Kashyap, who bowed out in the qualifiers after suffering a 21-15, 20-22, 7-21 defeat against South Korea’s Park Ga Eun.
In men’s doubles, the Indian duo of Hariharan Amsakarunan and M R Arjun pulled off a major upset by defeating France’s seventh-seeded brothers Christo Popov and Toma Junior Popov 21-19, 21-15 to advance to the second round.
The Indian pair will next take on the winners of the clash between Indonesia’s Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Marthin and China’s Hu Ke Yuan-Lin Xiang Yi.
