Indian distance runner Parul Chaudhary delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 Shanghai Diamond League, finishing seventh in the women’s 3000m steeplechase with a season-best timing of 9:12.84.
Competing against some of the world’s top steeplechase athletes, Parul narrowly missed her own national record by just 0.38 seconds while registering India’s second-fastest ever time in the event.
Strong Start To 2026 Season
The Shanghai meet marked Parul’s first major international outing of the 2026 season, and the Indian athlete immediately showed strong form ahead of a busy year in global athletics.
Her timing of 9:12.84 came close to the national record of 9:12.46 that she had set last year, further reinforcing her status as India’s leading women’s steeplechase runner.
The race featured an elite field led by Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai of Uganda, who won the event in a world-leading and meet-record time of 8:51.47. Kenya’s Faith Cherotich finished a close second in 8:51.48, while Tunisia’s Marwa Bouzayani claimed third place with a national-record effort of 8:58.09.
Parul Holds Her Own Against Elite Competition
Despite facing Olympic medallists and world champions, Parul maintained a strong pace throughout the race and remained competitive in one of the toughest Diamond League fields of the season.
Her seventh-place finish highlighted the growing consistency she has developed over the last few years on the international circuit.
The Indian runner has steadily emerged as a major force in Asian athletics after winning gold in the 5000m and silver in the 3000m steeplechase at the Asian Games. She is also an Arjuna Award recipient and currently serves as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Uttar Pradesh Police.
