Maharashtra Government Proposes Posthumous Padma Vibhushan for Wrestling Legend Khashaba Jadhav

The Maharashtra government has taken a significant step towards honouring wrestling icon Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav by forwarding a formal proposal to the Union Government for the posthumous conferment of the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award.

Khashaba Jadhav created history at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics by winning a bronze medal in bantamweight wrestling — becoming independent India’s first individual Olympic medallist. Despite his pioneering achievement, the legendary wrestler from Kolhapur never received the recognition many believe he richly deserved during his lifetime. He passed away in 1984.

The move comes after the Bombay High Court heard a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the ‘Kusteeveer Khashaba Jadhav Foundation’, founded by his son Ranjeet Jadhav. The court had directed the Centre to decide on the matter by May 4, prompting the state government to expedite the proposal.

Maharashtra’s decision has been warmly welcomed by the wrestling community and sports lovers across the country, who see this as long-overdue recognition for a trailblazer who put Indian wrestling on the global map with limited resources and support in the early years after Independence.

Khashaba Jadhav’s story of grit — training in mud pits, overcoming financial hardships, and competing against the world’s best — continues to inspire generations of Indian athletes.
