Indian wrestling star Vinesh Phogat shared a cryptic and emotional message on social media after the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) issued her a detailed show-cause notice and barred her from domestic competitions until June 26.
The three-time Olympian posted on X, writing, “Life is caught in some deep whirlpool’s midst. The world seeks flaws in my character, persists. Life has always held your head held high. No sword has the power to make it bow.” The message came amid escalating tensions between the wrestler and the federation over her planned return to competitive wrestling.
The WFI’s 15-page notice accuses Vinesh of multiple violations, including failure to complete the mandatory six-month return period after retirement under UWW anti-doping regulations, alleged anti-doping breaches, misconduct during selection trials, and issues linked to her disqualification at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
The suspension has effectively halted Vinesh’s much-anticipated comeback, which was expected to begin at the National Open Ranking Tournament in Gonda. The wrestler had announced her retirement following her heartbreaking disqualification from the Paris Olympics final in 2024 before declaring a comeback in December 2025 with hopes of qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The controversy has gained further attention because Vinesh recently revealed that she was among the six women wrestlers who had accused former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment during the nationwide protests that shook Indian wrestling in 2023.
Vinesh had also raised concerns about her safety while competing in Gonda, which is considered a stronghold of Brij Bhushan. She warned that the government would be responsible if anything happened to her or her team during the tournament.
Legal experts, meanwhile, have pointed out that the International Testing Agency reportedly treated her whereabouts failure as negligence rather than a major anti-doping offence, a point that could become important if the case escalates further.
