The 2027 edition of the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia is set to become one of the most demanding in the event’s recent history after organizers revealed a revised route featuring a record competitive distance.
The rally will cover 5,320 kilometers of timed special stages — the longest since Dakar moved to Saudi Arabia in 2020 — surpassing the 4,903 km competitive distance used in the 2025 edition.
New Route to Highlight Red Sea Region
Officials confirmed the rally will follow a full-loop course beginning and ending at King Abdullah Economic City.
The route will place greater emphasis on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea landscapes while introducing three entirely new stages to test competitors across varying terrain conditions.
Organizers said the 2027 edition will feature:
- More extensive sand sections
- Reduced rocky terrain
- Greater navigation complexity
- Longer endurance-focused stages
- A demanding marathon stage with limited assistance
The revised design is expected to significantly increase both technical difficulty and physical endurance demands for drivers and riders.
Saudi Arabia Deepens Motorsport Ambitions
Prince Khalid bin Sultan Al-Abdullah Al-Faisal, chairman of the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation, described Dakar as a natural fit for the Kingdom’s sporting vision.
Saudi Arabia has rapidly expanded its global sports portfolio through investments in Formula 1, Formula E, football, boxing, esports and major multi-sport events.
The Kingdom is also preparing to host the 2026 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games as part of its broader Vision 2030 sporting strategy.
Saudi Next Gen Program Launched
Alongside the route announcement, organizers also launched the third intake of the Saudi Next Gen program aimed at developing local rally-raid talent.
The initiative focuses on identifying and training young Saudi drivers and riders capable of eventually competing at elite international levels.
Officials also confirmed the continuation of the Mission 1000 innovation challenge, which encourages sustainable and alternative-energy technologies in motorsport.
Extreme Endurance and Sports Science in Rally Racing
Modern rally raid racing has become one of motorsport’s most physically demanding disciplines.
Competitors regularly endure:
- Temperatures exceeding 40°C
- Multi-hour driving stages
- Severe dehydration risks
- Cognitive fatigue from navigation stress
- Continuous vibration and muscular strain
Sports scientists now work closely with Dakar teams using hydration tracking, fatigue-monitoring systems, reaction testing and heat-acclimatization programs to optimize performance during extreme desert conditions.
Recovery between stages has become increasingly critical, especially during marathon stages where outside mechanical assistance is restricted.
Dakar Continues Global Evolution
Since relocating from South America to the Middle East, the Dakar Rally has evolved into one of Saudi Arabia’s flagship international sporting events.
The rally’s growing scale reflects both the expanding global popularity of rally raid racing and Saudi Arabia’s ambition to position itself as a leading international motorsport destination.
Registration for Dakar Rally Saudi Arabia 2027 has officially opened, including entries for the Dakar Classic category featuring historic vehicles.
