India Reaffirms Ban on Bilateral Sports With Pakistan, Allows Participation in Global Events

The Indian government has once again clarified its position on sporting relations with Pakistan, reaffirming that bilateral sports engagements between the two nations will remain suspended while participation in multinational competitions will continue.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports stated that India’s policy on sporting ties with Pakistan aligns with the country’s broader diplomatic approach towards its neighbour. The clarification comes amid renewed discussions surrounding future international sporting events involving both countries.

According to the ministry, Indian and Pakistani athletes will still be permitted to compete in multilateral tournaments, including global competitions organised under international federations and events hosted in India.

The statement effectively means that events such as ICC tournaments, Asian competitions, Olympic qualifiers, and other international championships featuring multiple nations will continue to include participation from both countries. However, standalone bilateral series or direct sporting engagements between India and Pakistan will not be permitted.

India and Pakistan have not played a full bilateral cricket series since 2012-13, with encounters largely restricted to ICC and Asian Cricket Council tournaments at neutral or multinational venues. Political tensions and security concerns have remained major obstacles to restoring regular sporting ties between the two neighbours.

The ministry also indicated that India would continue following international sporting commitments as it prepares to host several major global events in the coming years. The country is actively expanding its footprint in world sports administration and infrastructure development, including bids for future mega sporting events.

The latest clarification is expected to end speculation regarding India’s stance on upcoming international tournaments where Pakistani athletes and teams may participate.
