In a chaotic and emotionally charged main event at WrestleMania 42, Cody Rhodes successfully defended his Undisputed WWE Championship against former mentor Randy Orton, but the victory came amid controversy, interference, and a shocking post-match assault.
The clash between the two superstars was far from a straightforward contest. Even before the match officially began, chaos erupted as commentator Pat McAfee attempted to influence proceedings, only to be taken out after an attack involving Rhodes and musician Jelly Roll.
Once underway, the match lived up to its billing, with both Rhodes and Orton trading signature moves and near falls. Orton, reportedly dealing with a back issue, still managed to deliver explosive moments, including his trademark RKO. Rhodes responded in kind, even turning Orton’s own tactics against him in a gripping back-and-forth battle.
As the contest reached its climax, outside distractions once again played a role, with McAfee briefly reappearing in a referee’s role. However, the momentum ultimately shifted when Rhodes capitalised on the confusion, delivering his finishing move, Cross Rhodes, to secure the decisive pinfall victory.
Despite retaining his title, Rhodes’ night ended on a grim note. In a shocking turn, Orton launched a brutal post-match assault, striking Rhodes with the championship belt before delivering his infamous punt kick—leaving the champion laid out and raising concerns over his condition.
While Rhodes walked out of WrestleMania 42 still champion, the chaotic finish and Orton’s vicious attack ensured that their rivalry is far from over, setting the stage for an even more intense chapter ahead.
