Aberdeen have appointed Stephen Robinson as their new head coach after securing his release from St Mirren. The 51-year-old has signed a contract until the summer of 2029 and will begin his role immediately at Pittodrie.
Robinson leaves St Mirren after successful spell
Robinson joined St Mirren in February 2022 and enjoyed a successful period with the Paisley club. During his tenure, he guided the team to three consecutive top-six finishes in the Scottish Premiership.
Earlier this season, he also led St Mirren to victory in the Scottish League Cup, marking one of the highlights of his time at the club.
Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack praised Robinson’s record, describing him as a proven leader capable of building resilient and competitive teams despite limited resources.
Aberdeen seeking new direction
Robinson replaces caretaker boss Peter Leven, who stepped in following the dismissal of Jimmy Thelin earlier this year. Aberdeen have struggled in recent weeks, winning only once in their last eight matches.
Their disappointing run also included a shock Scottish Cup quarter-final defeat to Dunfermline Athletic.
Cormack said the club needed a clear identity and stronger performances, prompting the decision to make a permanent appointment quickly.
Robinson excited by Aberdeen challenge
Speaking after the announcement, Robinson said the opportunity to manage Aberdeen was too big to refuse. He highlighted the club’s history and ambition while promising to restore direction and competitiveness to the team.
Assistant coach Brian Kerr will also join Robinson at Aberdeen as part of the new management staff.
Meanwhile, St Mirren confirmed that Craig McLeish, Jamie Langfield and Allan McManus will take temporary charge until a new head coach is appointed.
