Three Ducks in Three Games: Abhishek Sharma Yet to Open His Account in T20 World Cup 2026

India posted a commanding total of 193 for 6 against the Netherlands in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 group-stage clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, but the talking point of the evening remained Abhishek Sharma’s continued struggles at the top of the order.

The left-handed opener was dismissed for a duck once again, marking his third consecutive score of zero in this edition of the tournament. He is yet to score a run in the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Third Consecutive Duck

Abhishek Sharma’s difficult campaign continued when he was bowled by Netherlands off-spinner Aryan Dutt early in the innings. Attempting to assert himself, Sharma was beaten and lost his stumps, departing without troubling the scorers.

This was his third straight duck in the tournament. He had previously been dismissed for zero against the USA and Pakistan. In three innings so far, the opener remains without a run, an unwanted statistic in a format where he is otherwise known for his aggressive intent and high strike rate.

The sequence of three consecutive ducks in a single T20 World Cup edition places Sharma in a rare and unfortunate category, especially considering his reputation as a powerplay enforcer.

India Recover to Post 193/6

Despite the early setback, India’s batting unit recovered strongly to post 193 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs.

The middle order ensured that the early wicket did not derail the innings. Ishan Kishan provided early momentum, while established names such as Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya contributed crucial runs to push the total close to the 200-run mark. Tilak Varma also played his part in stabilising the innings after the powerplay phase.

The Netherlands bowlers fought back at stages, with Aryan Dutt’s early breakthrough setting the tone. However, India’s depth in batting allowed them to maintain a healthy run rate through the middle and death overs.

Form Under the Spotlight

Abhishek Sharma entered the tournament with a strong T20 reputation, having built a profile as an attacking opener capable of taking games away inside the powerplay. His current run, however, has raised questions about form and confidence at the highest stage.

In T20 cricket, momentum is crucial, and three successive dismissals for zero in a global tournament inevitably intensify scrutiny. With the knockout stages approaching, India will be hoping for a turnaround from their explosive opener.

For now, the team’s overall performance with the bat has masked the individual slump. But as the tournament progresses, India will look for Abhishek Sharma to rediscover his rhythm and provide the rapid starts he is known for.

India, meanwhile, will focus on defending 193 against the Netherlands to close out their group campaign on a strong note and carry momentum into the next phase of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
