Bournemouth have completed the signing of Hungary midfielder Alex Toth from Ferencvaros for £10.4m. The 20-year-old has agreed a five-and-a-half-year contract, with the deal also including £2.6m in potential add-ons and a 10% sell-on clause. Toth becomes the Cherries’ third signing of the January window as Andoni Iraola strengthens his squad.
Deal details and stats
Toth has earned nine international caps for Hungary and has made 52 appearances for Ferencvaros, scoring four goals. The midfielder spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Soroksar before making his senior debut for Ferencvaros in December 2024. Clubs including Benfica, Galatasaray and Lazio were also keen on his signature.
Player reaction
Toth expressed his excitement after joining the Premier League club. He said, “When I knew AFC Bournemouth were interested, I was excited and happy. This is the best league in the world.” He added, “The whole club and the structure are great.”
Club view
Bournemouth’s head of football operations Tiago Pinto praised the signing, saying, “He has come from a club used to competing at the highest level and featuring in Europe. We’re excited about what he can bring as he develops under Andoni Iraola.”
What kind of player is Toth?
Hungarian football expert Bence Bocsak described Toth as a versatile midfielder who can play as a number eight, holding midfielder or number 10. He said, “He’s more of a deep-lying creator than a destroyer.” Bocsak added, “Everyone praises his character. He’s been the ultimate professional.”
Toth’s high pressing ability and intensity make him a good fit for Iraola’s system. Bocsak believes his best role at Bournemouth could be as an advanced midfielder.
January business
Toth follows the arrivals of Fraser Forster and Ade Solanke, making him Bournemouth’s third January signing as they continue to reshape the squad for the second half of the season.
