Former England midfielder Fara Williams criticised West Ham defender Estelle Cascarino after she was prevented from making her debut due to wearing an earring.

Cascarino, who recently joined West Ham on loan from Juventus, was set to come on at the start of the second half during a Women’s Super League match against Chelsea. With West Ham trailing 4-0, new manager Rita Guarino attempted to introduce the 28-year-old, but match officials stopped her because she was wearing an earring that could not be removed.

FA rules deny debut chance

According to Football Association regulations, “all items of jewellery are forbidden and must be removed,” with no exceptions. Even covering jewellery with tape is not permitted under English rules.

Williams described the incident as a “schoolgirl error” while speaking on The Women’s Football Show. She said a new signing should be eager to make a strong first impression, and this was not the right way to do it.

Different rules abroad

Cascarino had previously been allowed to play with taped earrings during her time at Juventus. However, the FA’s stricter stance meant the same approach was not accepted in England.

Guarino expressed her frustration, saying Cascarino could not remove the earring without medical assistance. She added that the player had featured in Champions League matches with tape and questioned how such a situation had been overlooked.

Reaction from pundits

Former Wales defender Nia Jones labelled the incident an “absolute circus” for West Ham. She highlighted Cascarino’s experience as a French international who has played for Juventus and PSG.

Jones added that the situation was embarrassing and said she was relieved Cascarino was not allowed to come on at all.

West Ham eventually lost the match 5-0, adding to a difficult day for the club.
