I Want To Contribute To Women In Sport In General And In India: Gierts

SG Pipers Coach Speaks On Her Vision For Women’s Sports Development
Sofie Gierts, head coach of the SG Pipers in the Women’s Hockey India League (WHIL), has said that contributing to the growth of women in sport — particularly in India — is a key motivation behind her involvement in the league. Gierts, one of the few women coaches at the professional level, believes India holds immense potential to become a global force in women’s sport.
Belief In Indian Players’ Potential
Gierts praised the confidence and natural ability of Indian women hockey players, noting that young athletes display fearlessness and creativity on the field. She said these qualities, when supported by structured training and competitive exposure, can translate into sustained success at the international level.
According to her, Indian players are eager to learn, adaptable, and possess a strong work ethic, which makes coaching them both challenging and rewarding.
Importance Of Opportunity And Exposure
The Belgian coach stressed that professional leagues such as the WHIL play a crucial role in providing exposure, competitive experience, and financial stability to women athletes. She highlighted that consistent platforms allow players to develop skills, build confidence, and dream bigger about their sporting careers.
Gierts added that visibility and investment are essential for changing perceptions around women’s sport and ensuring long-term growth.
Promoting Gender Balance In Coaching
As one of the few women coaches in top-tier hockey, Gierts acknowledged the responsibility that comes with her role. She expressed hope that her presence would encourage more women to pursue careers in coaching and sports leadership.
She believes that gender diversity in coaching not only inspires athletes but also brings different perspectives to team management and player development.
A Long-Term Commitment To Indian Sport
Looking ahead, Gierts said her aim goes beyond winning matches. She wants to contribute to building a stronger ecosystem for women’s sport in India by nurturing young talent, supporting grassroots development, and helping players reach their full potential.
“I want to contribute to women in sport in general and in India,” Gierts said, reiterating her commitment to empowering athletes and strengthening the future of women’s hockey.
