India Hold Nerves — Beat Uruguay in Shootout After Dramatic 1-1 Draw

Early Promise, Late Drama

In a tightly contested 9th–12th classification match at the FIH Junior Women’s World Cup in Santiago, India took an early lead in the 19th minute through a well-crafted strike by Manisha. The team controlled possession, created multiple circle entries, and looked firmly in command through most of the match.

But Uruguay refused to fade. In a stunning twist, with just two seconds left on the clock, Justina Arregui converted a penalty stroke to level the score 1–1, pushing the match into a shootout.

India Stay Ice-Cold in Shootout

Despite the late setback, India showed remarkable composure in the shootout:

  • Purnima Yadav, Ishika, and Kanika Siwach converted their attempts with confidence.

  • Goalkeeper Nidhi delivered a stellar performance, pulling off three crucial saves to secure a 3–1 shootout victory.

Her brilliance between the posts proved decisive, ensuring India’s progression to the 9th/10th place playoff.

What the Win Signals

  • Resilience Under Pressure: Conceding a last-second goal could have rattled any side, but India regrouped instantly — a sign of growing mental strength within the squad.

  • Goalkeeping Excellence: Nidhi’s calm presence and sharp reactions turned the tide during the shootout.

  • Depth and Composure: Multiple scorers in the shootout showcase a team comfortable under high-stakes conditions.

Road Ahead

India will now face Spain in the 9th/10th place playoff, with momentum firmly on their side. This win, built on grit, tactical discipline, and mental toughness, adds an important chapter to the team’s World Cup journey.

For a young and evolving squad, the victory over Uruguay is more than just progression — it is proof of character, maturity, and the ability to deliver when it matters most.
