The 37th National Sub-Junior Badminton Championship concluded Saturday at the state-of-the-art Dalmia Bharat Gopichand Badminton Excellence Centre in Bhubaneswar, with a spectacular performance from local sensation Tanvi Patri, who clinched a remarkable double crown in the Girls’ categories.
Tanvi’s dominance delivered a golden finish for the host state, as she secured both the Under-15 and Under-17 Girls’ Singles titles on the final day of the tournament.
A Golden Double for Tanvi Patri
The Odia player showcased a blend of clinical efficiency and sheer tenacity in her two finals:
U-15 Girls’ Singles: Tanvi made quick work of her opponent, dispatching Avani Vikram Govind of Telangana in straight games with a commanding scoreline of 21-9, 21-13.
U-17 Girls’ Singles: The final was a high-octane thriller that tested her championship resolve. After dropping the opening game, Tanvi staged a stunning comeback to overcome Diksha S. R. of Tamil Nadu in a riveting three-game encounter: 20-22, 21-17, 22-20. The nail-biting finish highlights her exceptional mental fortitude.
Podium Finish for Local Doubles Pair
Odisha also celebrated a silver medal performance in the U-15 Girls’ Doubles category. The home duo of Swati Nayak and Nimisha Ojha fought hard but ultimately finished as runners-up, falling to the formidable Maharashtra pair of Sarayu Ranjane and Soyara Shelar with scores of 15-21, 14-21.
In the Boys’ categories, the U-15 Boys’ Singles title was claimed by Pushkar from Karnataka, while the U-17 Boys’ Singles trophy went to the top-seeded player, Jagsher Singh Khangura of Punjab.
OSBA Announces Special Prize Money
To recognize the extraordinary success of the state’s players, Rajesh Prabhakar Patil, President of the Odisha State Badminton Association (OSBA), announced a special financial reward during the prize distribution ceremony:
Tanvi Patri (Double Champion): Awarded a special prize of ₹5 Lakh (Five Lakh Rupees).
Nimisha Ojha & Swati Nayak (Doubles Runners-Up): To receive a special prize of ₹2.5 Lakh (Two Lakh Fifty Thousand Rupees).
The total prize money for the National Championship, which was distributed among all category Champions and Runners-up, amounted to a substantial ₹40 Lakh (Forty Lakh Rupees).
The closing ceremony was graced by notable dignitaries, including Anu Garg (Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary) and Sachin Ramchandra Yadav (Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Sports and Youth Services), alongside key officials from the OSBA and the Badminton Association of India.
