British driver Norris misses chance to seal F1 title in Qatar after McLaren strategy error
Lando Norris will have to wait another week to try and clinch his maiden Formula One world championship, after a costly McLaren strategy call denied the British driver a podium finish at the Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday night.
The race, which Norris entered with a 24-point lead over rivals Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri, saw the decisive moment unfold on lap seven when a collision between Nico Hülkenberg and Pierre Gasly triggered a safety car. While almost the entire grid dived into the pits, McLaren opted to keep both Norris and Piastri out—an approach that proved disastrous under the mandatory two-stop tyre rule.
The decision allowed Verstappen to seize control of the race and cruise to victory, while Piastri recovered to second and Norris was forced to settle for fourth after a late overtake on Kimi Antonelli. With the setback, Norris’s championship margin shrinks to just 12 points over Verstappen, with Piastri a further four behind—meaning all three remain in contention going into next weekend’s Abu Dhabi finale.
“We were the ones who took the gamble today, and it was the wrong decision,” Norris said afterwards. “It wasn’t our greatest day, but I put myself in this position with the run of results before. Everyone has bad weekends—we take it on the chin and go again.”
Team principal Andrea Stella admitted the situation should have been handled differently and confirmed there was no intention to avoid favouring one driver over the other.
“It was a decision not to pit. We didn’t expect everyone else to stop,” Stella explained. “Once they did, that became the right strategy. Oscar should have won, and Lando should have been on the podium.”
Norris’s chance to seal the championship remains within reach: if the 26-year-old finishes at least third in Abu Dhabi, he will become world champion regardless of his rivals’ finishing positions.
> “I feel good. It is what it is. Looking ahead,” said Norris, reflecting on the upcoming title showdown at Yas Marina.
The stage is now set for a dramatic three-way decider—Norris, Verstappen and Piastri fighting for the crown under the lights next Sunday.
