New Delhi:
India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has expressed strong confidence that star batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are capable of featuring in the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, provided they continue to maintain their fitness and hunger for the game.
Speaking to reporters, Morkel highlighted that the experience and temperament of the senior duo are assets that cannot be easily replaced. According to him, both players still have the ability to perform at the highest level and can remain integral to India’s ODI plans if they remain committed to rigorous preparation.
Experience Still Valuable
Morkel praised the influence Kohli and Rohit continue to bring to the team environment. He noted that while the next World Cup is still two years away, the presence of such seasoned campaigners can significantly strengthen India’s chances in a high-pressure tournament. Their track record in global events, he added, speaks for itself.
He emphasised that age alone should not be the deciding factor and that “as long as they are happy to put the hard work in and maintain fitness,” the door remains open for both players.
Comeback Signals Continued Intent
Despite stepping away from Test and T20 cricket, both Kohli and Rohit have remained active in the ODI format. Their recent inclusion in India’s white-ball squads has been viewed as a sign that they remain part of the long-term plans heading into the next World Cup cycle.
Morkel’s comments echo the sentiments of several former players and experts who believe the pair’s experience and proven match-winning ability will be crucial as India builds toward 2027.
Fitness And Form The Deciding Factors
While the support for their participation is strong, Morkel maintained that continued physical readiness and consistent performances will be key factors in determining their selection. He stressed that professionalism and discipline will play a major role as the workload increases ahead of the World Cup.
Impact On Team India
Should both veterans make the cut for the 2027 World Cup, their presence could provide India with stability and leadership during pressure situations. Their guidance is also expected to benefit the emerging players entering the national setup.
With two years still to go, India’s plans may evolve, but for now, the outlook remains optimistic. Kohli and Rohit, two of India’s most influential cricketers, have the opportunity to extend their legacy on the sport’s biggest stage—if they choose to and if their bodies allow it.
