Newcastle United pulled off a stunning upset against Manchester City in the Premier League, with Harvey Barnes being the star of the match. The Matchday 12 contest was held at St James’s Park, where Barnes scored both goals for Newcastle.
His first goal came from outside the box in the 63rd minute. His second was a close-range finish in the 70th minute after Bruno Guimaraes’s header hit the bar, following a cross from Jacob Murphy.
Howe pulls off his first win against Manchester City in Premier League
The victory marked a rare win for head coach Eddie Howe against Pep Guardiola’s team. Howe managed to win a Premier League game against Manchester City for the first time in his managerial career (W1 D2 L16).
Howe also beat Pep Guardiola in a Premier League game for the first time in his managerial career in 17 attempts (D2 L14).
Manchester City drop vital points, remain 3rd behind Chelsea and Arsenal
The Citizens dropped vital points after having seen Chelsea leapfrog them earlier on Saturday to go 2nd. Guardiola’s men own 22 points, one behind Chelsea (23). Meanwhile, Arsenal can open up a 7-point gap over Guardiola’s men if they win the North London derby on Sunday.
Barnes shines for Newcastle
Barnes, who had missed a couple of big chances in the first half, showed resilience after the break. He scored a clinical goal from outside the area and then stepped up again after City equalised. This was a much-needed response for Newcastle, who have been known to drop points from winning positions this season. Barnes, in particular, was the hero with his goal-scoring attributes.
Barnes also scored his 52nd goal in the Premier League.
As per Opta, Barnes is the first Newcastle player to score twice in a Premier League game against Manchester City since Alan Shearer in November 2003, with tonight being their 40th meeting in the competition since the legend’s brace.
