Three-time IPL winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have announced the appointment of former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson as their assistant coach ahead of the IPL 2026 season.
Watson, one of the most decorated T20 cricketers in the world, previously served as assistant coach for Delhi Capitals (DC) under Ricky Ponting during the 2022 and 2023 IPL seasons. He now joins a refreshed KKR coaching unit that includes Abhishek Nayar as head coach and Dwayne Bravo as team mentor, while Ajinkya Rahane will lead the side as captain.
Watson’s first assignment will be to provide key inputs for KKR’s player retention decisions ahead of the November 15 deadline and to assist in preparation for the mini auction in Abu Dhabi scheduled for mid-December.
Expressing his excitement, Watson said, “It’s a great honour to be part of a franchise as iconic as Kolkata Knight Riders. I’ve always admired the passion of KKR fans and the team’s commitment to excellence. I’m eager to work closely with the coaching group and players to help bring another title to Kolkata.”
A two-time Men’s ODI World Cup winner (2007 and 2015), Watson is widely regarded as one of Australia’s finest seam-bowling all-rounders. Over his illustrious career, he represented Australia in 59 Tests, 190 ODIs, and 58 T20 Internationals, amassing more than 10,000 runs and over 280 wickets across formats.
Watson also enjoyed a prolific IPL career, playing 145 matches between 2008 and 2020, scoring four centuries and lifting the trophy with both Rajasthan Royals (2008) and Chennai Super Kings (2018). He was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the 2008 and 2013 seasons for his match-winning performances.
Welcoming Watson to the franchise, Venky Mysore, CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders, said, “We are thrilled to welcome Shane Watson to the KKR family. His experience as a player and coach at the highest level will add immense value to our team culture and preparation. His understanding of the T20 format is world-class, and we look forward to his contributions both on and off the field.”
With this appointment, KKR’s new leadership quartet — Nayar, Bravo, Watson, and Rahane — signals a strong intent to rebuild and challenge for their third IPL title, after previous triumphs in 2012 and 2014.
