Haris Rauf Suspended Amid Claims ICC Failed to Notify Player About Demerit Points

Dubai: Pakistan fast bowler Haris Rauf has been handed a two-match suspension by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following repeated breaches of its Code of Conduct during the Asia Cup 2025. The suspension has sparked controversy in Pakistan, with media outlets questioning the ICC’s procedural handling, particularly the fact that Rauf was not formally informed of the demerit points after his first incident, denying him a timely chance to respond.

Rauf Not Informed of Demerit Points: Pakistan Media Questions ICC Procedure

Pakistani cricket analysts and media commentators have criticized the ICC for not notifying Rauf about the accumulation of demerit points after the Super 4 match against India on September 14. Critics argue this lack of communication may have prevented him from presenting a defense, raising concerns about procedural fairness and transparency in ICC disciplinary processes.

The Gesture That Sparked Controversy

The suspension stems from two separate incidents in which Rauf made a gesture resembling a “crashing jet” after dismissing Indian batsmen.

Super 4 match (Sept 14, Dubai): Rauf’s first gesture went viral, leading to an ICC charge under Article 2.21, a fine of 30% of his match fee, and two demerit points.

Asia Cup Final (Sept 28, Dubai): Rauf repeated the same gesture, resulting in two additional demerit points, bringing his total to four within 24 months — triggering a two-match suspension under ICC rules.

ICC’s Official Sanction

The ICC confirmed that Rauf will miss Pakistan’s first two ODIs against South Africa, scheduled for November 4 and 6, 2025, in Karachi.

“Rauf was found guilty of two breaches of Article 2.21 during the Asia Cup 2025. Accumulating four demerit points in the same 24-month period converts into two suspension points, equating to a ban for two limited-overs matches,” said the ICC.

Match referee Andy Pycroft conducted the hearing, and the PCB accepted the ruling without appeal.

Impact on Pakistan Team

Rauf’s absence is a major blow to Pakistan’s pace attack. Known for his speed and aggression, he was a key strike bowler during the Asia Cup campaign. PCB is expected to rely on Mohammad Wasim Jr. or Shahnawaz Dahani as replacements in the ODIs

Broader Context: India-Pakistan Rivalry

The 2025 Asia Cup was marked by intense moments between India and Pakistan players, including verbal exchanges and provocative celebrations. Rauf’s gestures mirrored similar actions by India’s Jasprit Bumrah, intensifying media scrutiny and fan debates.

The ICC emphasized that symbolic gestures, taunts, or actions that might incite spectators or undermine sportsmanship will not be tolerated.

Reactions and Debate

Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq said “Rauf is a passionate player, but he must understand that the world is watching. These actions can damage the team’s image.”

Indian players Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Arshdeep Singh were fined for separate incidents but were not suspended, prompting discussion on consistency in ICC penalties.

What Lies Ahead for Rauf

Rauf is expected to return for the third ODI against South Africa on November 9, 2025, once his suspension ends. PCB officials are counseling him on maintaining professionalism and composure on-field.
