Sydney, October 28: India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav has provided a positive update on Shreyas Iyer’s health after the middle-order batter sustained a spleen injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney.
“He’s recovering well, replying to us on phone — that means he’s doing absolutely fine. It was an unfortunate incident, but the doctors are taking care of him. He’ll be monitored for the next few days, but there’s nothing to worry about,” Suryakumar said on the eve of the five-match T20I series against Australia.
Iyer was admitted to the ICU of a Sydney hospital after suffering a freak injury while taking a diving catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. He landed awkwardly on his ribs and elbows, immediately clutching his side in pain before being escorted off the field by medical staff.
The BCCI later confirmed that scans had revealed a laceration injury to Iyer’s spleen.
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI in Sydney on October 25. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is medically stable and recovering well,” the Board said in a statement.
The BCCI added that its medical team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring Iyer’s condition. The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney to oversee his day-to-day recovery.
Iyer had been in good form before the setback, scoring a composed 61 off 77 balls in the second ODI in Adelaide and finishing the series with 72 runs in two matches. His participation in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, starting November 30, now appears uncertain.
The 30-year-old has been a vital cog in India’s middle order this year, amassing 496 runs in 11 ODIs at an average of 49.60 and a strike rate of 89.53, including five fifties. He was also India’s highest run-scorer in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, tallying 243 runs in five innings with two half-centuries.
Despite the injury setback, Suryakumar’s reassuring words suggest that Iyer is on the path to recovery — a relief for Team India as they gear up for a packed international calendar ahead.
