AB De Villiers Defends Rohit Sharma And Virat Kohli, Slams Critics For “Trying To Push Them Down”

Bhubaneswar: Cricket legend AB de Villiers has come out strongly in defense of Indian stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, criticizing those who, he says, are “just trying to push them down.” His remarks followed India’s emphatic win over Australia in the third and final ODI of the series, where the veteran duo produced a clinical run chase to restore pride.

Rohit and Kohli combined for an unbeaten 168-run partnership, steering India to a commanding nine-wicket victory and avoiding a series whitewash. Rohit led from the front with an unbeaten 121, while Kohli anchored the innings with 74*, reaffirming their status as two of the greatest modern-day batsmen.

De Villiers, who has shared many battles against both players, expressed his disappointment at the constant criticism directed toward them.

“I don’t know if I can call them people … Cockroaches climbing out of their holes as soon as players get towards the backend of their careers,” de Villiers said during his YouTube show.

He added that fans should be cherishing this stage of their careers instead of tearing them down.

“Why do you want to pour negative energy into players that have given their lives for their country and this beautiful game of cricket? This is the perfect time to celebrate them.”

Rohit’s hundred was his 33rd in ODIs, taking him to third on the all-time list behind Virat Kohli (51) and Sachin Tendulkar (49). Kohli, meanwhile, became the second-highest run-scorer in ODI history, surpassing Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara with 14,255 runs in 305 matches.

The pair’s dominant performance came after a rocky start to the series — Rohit had managed just 8 in the opener, and Kohli endured consecutive ducks before rediscovering his rhythm. Their comeback, however, silenced critics and reminded fans of their unmatched quality under pressure.

De Villiers’ defense of the two stalwarts has struck a chord with fans across the cricketing world, reinforcing a broader message about respecting veterans who have carried the game for years.

As India shift focus to upcoming fixtures, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s partnership in Sydney will be remembered not just for the runs they scored, but for the statement they made — that true champions rise above criticism and let their bats do the talking.
