Sinner Withdraws from Davis Cup; Alcaraz to Lead Spain

Bhubaneswar: In a significant development ahead of the upcoming Davis Cup Finals, world No. 2 Jannik Sinner has formally declared he will not represent his home nation of Italy in the event scheduled for November 18-23 in Bologna.

Italian team captain Filippo Volandri confirmed: “Jannik Sinner has not given his availability for 2025.” He added that while Sinner’s absence is regrettable, the team remains committed and prepared.

Sinner played a central role in Italy’s recent back-to-back Davis Cup triumphs and was expected to feature in the Final 8 on home soil. Instead, he will prioritise his individual calendar, including the ATP Finals in Turin followed by preparations for the Australian Open. He described the decision as “not an easy one” but necessary to ensure peak performance.

Italy’s announced squad will move ahead without him, featuring players such as Matteo Berrettini, Lorenzo Musetti, Simone Bolelli, Flavio Cobolli and Andrea Vavassori.

Meanwhile, world-No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz has been confirmed as part of Spain’s roster for the Finals, signalling Spain’s ambition to reclaim the title for the first time since 2019. He will be joined by Jaume Munar, Pedro Martínez and Marcel Granollers.

The Final 8 draw has also been revealed: Italy will face Austria, France meets Belgium, Spain takes on the Czech Republic, and Argentina plays host to Germany.

Sinner’s decision marks a major shift for the defending champions and raises questions about Italy’s title defence. At the same time, Alcaraz representing Spain adds fresh weight to the tournament, setting the stage for a compelling team competition.
