Bhubaneswar: Australia captain Alyssa Healy will miss her side’s high-profile match against England Women in the ongoing Women’s ODI World Cup after suffering a “minor calf strain” during training.
The injury occurred during a session on Saturday, with Australia’s coach Shelley Nitschke describing the captain’s setback as “really unfortunate”. As a result, Vice-captain Tahlia McGrath will lead the team in Healy’s absence.
Healy has been in formidable form during the tournament, topping the run-chart with 294 runs from four innings, including successive centuries of 142 and 113*. With her out of the match, wicket-keeper duties will shift to Beth Mooney, while Georgia Voll is expected to open in the playing XI alongside Phoebe Litchfield.
Australia have already qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament and sit atop the points table, so the immediate pressure of qualification is alleviated. However, the timing of Healy’s injury is far from ideal, given her rich recent form and role as captain.
The medical team will monitor her on a day-to-day basis to assess whether she may be fit to return for Australia’s final group match against South Africa Women and potentially the knockout rounds. With Healy unavailable for the moment, Australia have the chance to test their squad depth and allow others to step into critical roles.
In short, for Australia, the clash with England will be a test of bench strength. For Healy, the focus now shifts from outstanding form to recovery — with a view to returning at full strength when the stakes climb in the knockouts.
